Marriage Equality: first Southeast Asian country to legalise same-sex Bill
Thailand’s Senate has overwhelmingly approved a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, positioning the country to become the first in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to enact such a law. Despite Thailand’s reputation for acceptance, it has struggled for decades with conservative societal values and governmental resistance to passing a marriage equality law. The newly approved bill grants full legal, financial, and medical rights to marriage partners of any gender, following a strong approval from the House of Representatives with 400 out of 415 members in favor.
